Recently had about 3 different coworkers contemplate buying the Iphone 4. Here was the scenario:

1. Person#1 – has been with Sprint for a number of years, was going to switch to AT&T, a coworker and myself persuaded him to get the HTC EVO since it was on his network, he was due for a renewal and well, it does everything the i4 does.

2. Person#2 – the assistant manager has been with Verizon for a number of years and was researching the iphone 4, one of my friends has the iphone and was talking to him about it. After conducting his own research he opted to renew with Verizon and get the Droid X.

3. Person #3 – a friend of a friend of mine at work has AT&T and when the new iphone came out was going to get the new iphone 4, however he said only his wife wanted it but they just had a new baby. So instead he opted to get the motorola backflip (2 of them) he said he and his wife couldn’t have been happier for switching.

4. Person#4 – Already had the iphone 3GS the he just recently bought, so he went and bought the iphone4 and then gave the older iphone to his son, who then give his existing iphone to his bro.

5. 3 other coworkers opted to get Android phones when they renewed their contract in the last 6 months.

So far no one I know in my entire department of 80 or so people has quit their carrier to go get an iphone.

So far, no

Three things:
- Project Natal for Xbox 360-
- 3D monitors / LCDs
- Bumptop 3D desktop

Plus: some really awesome software

Instead of using a keyboard and mouse, use 3D projected images of the 3D desktop and interact with them similar to Tom Cruise in Minority Report minus the gloves and blurry images. Natal supposedly boasts the ability to have speech recognition, facial recognition and spatial real-time modeling (it can tell how close or far, up or down, left or right you are as well as what limbs you are moving). This would be great for certain jobs, think architecture or design say like in Iron Man 1 or 2. Supposing the Natal tech gets put in with the 3D glasses, then the software figures out where you are making contact with objects in 3D. All I can think of is that maybe some pressure sensing gloves might assist in giving the sensation of how heavy / light or that you’ve made contact with something. Plus the gloves might help the software better follow slight or small finger movements that are specific to the user, like training the software / learning. Add speech dictation or just record mp3′s straight to text with video or just record videos for messages. Forget typing text only. Then you can have video calls directly using VOIP and webchat services through google/yahoo/hotmail, etc. At the very least then when we have true 4G connections and phones have 2 cameras on them we can start experiencing a bit of the future now. Or is the future now anyways? Hmm…. where did I park my time machine.

It’s a great idea no doubt. Regardless of any technical hurdles then you eliminate some of the physical issues like carpel tunnel, although you might not fully remove it. Every time I see a science fiction movie like Avatar and people are still “touching” screens and typing on keyboards or flat panel what’s it, I think its just the mindset of people who write films / entertainment media; they still haven’t gotten past the idea that you type on a keyboard, dial numbers on a screen. Why do you even have to insert an ATM card into the ATM, it should just recognize you by voice and face regardless of outfit. Why do you even then having that technology even have to go to an ATM to get “money” how silly does wasting ink and paper / linen become when we have that technology. You have a SSN, a driver’s licencse, and a ton of other numbers… perhaps a debate for a future post.

So far I have yet to find a good blog client / software for the android OS. After spending nearly 2 weeks getting ready to move and then moving, on top of that apartment searching day in / out on craigslist I have yet to find a good channel for information via mobile. However, there is a wordpress app for the android, there is a facebook and a twitter app and… a google buzz app.

On the topic of Google Buzz:
This is inherently a great idea: have a way to socially micro-blog a’la twitter clone but make it from Google then integrate it into gmail. Then everyone you gmail already has it and then you don’t have to sign up and re-add all the people already following you on facebook, myspace, digg, blogspot, hyper24x7.com, etc…. that’s the flaw right there. Did you see it?
EVERYONE IS ALREADY DOING IT GOOGLE. FAIL.

Not everyone is even using twitter or facebook to socially communicate. Granted plenty of tech-savvy folks have gmail but they already have the other things: a twitter linked to facebook. So how can you turn this around so that Google Buzz is now still an inherently good idea?

MAKE IT LINK TO FACEBOOK AND TWITTER… DUH.

I haven’t seen it yet, but someday all the companies will play nice with each other support their own protocols and formats, heck we might even see triple boot iphones with Windows Mobile, Mac OS and Android and monkeys might also write their own OS while blogging about bananas and the Dancing with the Stars finale.

SO. I have it, do I use it? No. I’ve popped a few things on Buzz, but as yet, nobody I know is buzzing about buzz. They either reject the idea of twitter altogether, stating, “Yes I know you know I’m bored, but do you really want me to tell you: how much work sucks, how my ex-boyfriend / ex-girlfriend is retarded or that yet again traffic also is everywhere in an urban setting.”

Here’s my comment back to Google:
We get it. You wanted to be cool and hang out with the cool kids, but you didn’t have a cool kid toy. You didn’t buy Facebook and you didn’t event twitter. It’s ok; we are perfectly happy with search engine results and not using Bing cuz well, Bing is the devil.” Make Google Buzz push to Twitter and link it to Facebook, which they very well may be doing.
