Gamesradar’s 5 reasons to HATE FF games
That’s right Final Fantasy fanboys, I AGREE with Gamesradar. I’m not really a huge fan of emo effeminate JRPG heroes and hence I’m not entirely to excited about another FF game on the shelves. However before anyone sets of a nuclear hack-attack or fan-boy fan comment freakout, let me clarify that I’m actually hearing good things about FF13.
However, I only liked FF7, if that’s a consolation or an indication of my RPG “pickiness” then well don’t think I’m in love with Bethseda for making Oblivion or Fallout. I think I have my own sort of “why I don’t like Final Fantasy” list. So here goes:
Environmentalism
Whether it be GAIA, earth energy or stealing the souls of lost trees, I think I’ve seen enough of let’s save the earth or how we have left our home in the forest in JRPGs to last a long time in gaming. Granted the environment as a theme is definitely popular and I’m not in any way condoning pollution, big-business or governments turning a blind eye or deaf ear to it. It just seems over done and I’d like to get past it, if not just for originality’s sake.
Magic and Technology
Tech in games is cool. Magic in games is cool. Not since Arcanum have I seen any once of game-writing intelligence put it together that, “hey, magic and tech are OPPOSITES.” Hello, does anybody not get this? Call me old-fashioned, but the last time I checked my D&D, the schools of making machines and the school of magic didn’t hangout together. It may sound nit-picky and snobby, but it seems that if you can wield magical energy such as telekinetic powers or the ability to say shoot fire from your finger tips some things like say cellphones, guns and jet-packs might not mix so well.
Romance and Love Interests
I think the emotional complexities of dating someone you are also fighting for survival with are more intricate than most games portray. Granted some may argue it is an RPG, just a game, etc. then the whole thing unravels for me. If it is a game why do games have to have a love interest. Whatever happened to “Wow we survived, AWESOME.” and that be it. I’m sure its romantic and cool to think that if we just met someone we’d fight of 20 to 10000 bad guys (with only 1 motive, being evil) with swords and magic, guns and space mecha, but it just doesn’t work for me that you end up “in love” or that you’d do it all for love. I say RPGs without love interests are more like “role-playing games” in that you have to do more than just dangle eye-candy and CGI women. If there were REAL love / romance it would be going on all around although not amped up to the “humping like bunnies” level. Call me old and grouchy but I don’t think every story has a justified romance subplot.
