Bumptop – 3D Desktop

This app / desktop replacement was recently acquired by Google, so it warranted another look. Initially the concept sounds simple, make your desktop 3D, then add a few bells and whistles to sweeten the deal and then make it touchscreen compatible. Sounds like a easy setup? In fact it is one of the easiest setups aI’ve ever had to do on any software. Save for one detail. There was a significant amount of download associated with this program, I had to download the Direct X APK and SDK’s granted this is all automated and comes out relatively quickly since they are online downlaods. Also One feature I’m not so sure about initially is that the program “dials home” what this means as far as it working after the3 1 week period between Bumptop being acquired and it shutting down I don’t quite know.

Here are the facts:
- 3D Desktop (non-ppro version)with 3 or 4 walls easily accessible by either dragging items to it or placing shortcuts on the desktop
- you can click the floor or wall to zoom in on that area, throw things onto the wall.
- Icons are 3d and can be thrown into rough piles that you make as if you threw paper in a corner or you can left click and drag to lasso a bunch of icons or the desktop to make a “pile” within the bumptop system.
- Its a bummer that the pro version is required to flip between the items in a pile but its not terrible since if you wanted you could go onto torrents and find a crack (which I did) but shortly after the download i found that the download had a bit of malware in it, so I quickly deleted it and said 4 Hail Marys to he computer gods for being a sinner, then went back to searching for more.
-If you do have a pile, you can fan it out like a deck of cards to find something in it, although this seems slower than if you just had the icon on the desktop and went straight for it rather than adding an extra step.
- Widgets: Included are a few useful widgets such as facebook, twitter, photoframe (slideshow auto-setting).
+ One particulary interesting one is a printer, drag a document to it to print. This does save time if you know what you want to print instead of having to open it you can drag straight to it.
+ Another interesting feature is dragging a document or file straight to the email button and it will open your default email client with the attachment on a blank message .
+ Finally a third unique feature is being able to drag files to share them, it creates a small temporary url to send out that hosts the files. I didn’t see any details on who is hosting it, however this could be useful if you want to email say 40 MB of docs to a person.
- Themes: Bumptop also does still have integrated theme support and luckily it hasn’t been shut down, just right click the desktop, select “More”, then select “Bumptop Themes” from here you can pick out themes or modify the walls / floor etc.

Final verdict: Worth a look. Definitely could be more useful if you had a 3D touchscreen, think touchscreen (you wear 3D glasses) and then manipulate objects in 3D space on your screen. Other than that I wasn’t too sure if I’d keep using this other than on my touchscreen laptop, even then it seemed cumbersome. It will be interesting to see what features get added when the product is integrated, re-iterated or re-something when Google uses it in its Chrome OS.
